Web Based Accounting Software
In today’s technological environment, more and more companies are electing to use web based accounting software. A few common benefits include:

Although these benefits are difficult to ignore, there are a few things you should carefully consider before opting for a web based program.
Perhaps the most important consideration is whether or not you, or your accountant, will have access to the internet when you plan to complete your work.
Despite the fact that wireless internet connections are readily available throughout the United States, and Canada, there will be times where its availability will be marginal at best.
Cost is, of course, another important consideration. In lieu of a large up-front expense, many web based accounting software programs charge its users a monthly fee. Many times these charges can add up to be more than if you would have purchase a desktop application instead.
Desktop Accounting Software
Despite the increase in popularity of web based accounting solutions, desktop accounting programs will always be popular. With desktop systems, all of your work must be done on your local computer or server. Designed essentially for those companies that have a stable workforce, users of desktop accounting programs must physically log into the same computer each and every time they want to complete their work.
Many first time business owners often assume that they must purchase, and use, a program such as QuickBooks or PeachTree. While it is true that these programs are robust enough to satisfy the accounting needs of companies of all sizes, many small businesses simply won’t use many of the available modules. This is particularly true for sole proprietors that report all of their earnings on their personal tax return. For these companies, an inexpensive program, such as Quicken, should handle all of their accounting needs.
Enterprise Level Systems
Most of the time when a small business is searching for a home based accounting program, enterprise level systems are simply not explored. While this may be perfectly acceptable a majority of the time, every now and then a home-based company becomes large enough to warrant a more complex accounting system.
One common example might include a multi-location, technology based business that needs to be able to have a number of users log in, track their time, and bill customers from any location. Typically, enterprise level systems are a bit more expensive. Furthermore, in order to be completely secure from hackers, and other types of cyber criminals, a VPN is also generally required.
Regardless of the type of home accounting software program you ultimately decide to use, it is crucial that you first determine what your accounting requirements will be. Otherwise, you may end up with more, or less, than you truly need.
